Professor John H. Farrar is a specialist in comparative corporate law and corporate governance and the impact of the Global Financial Crisis on regulatory systems.


He teaches and supervises research in Corporations Law, Corporate Governance, White Collar Crime and Fraud, and  Corporate Insolvency.
 

PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY

John graduated with LLB (Hons), LLM and LLD from University College London and PhD from the University of Bristol. In 2014 he was awarded an LLD (Honoris Causa) by Bond University for services to the University. He qualified as a legal practitioner in England and Wales, New Zealand and Australia.

He has held chairs at Cardiff, Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington, Melbourne and Bond. He was Dean of Law at the University of Canterbury (1985-88), Bond University (1993-96) and University of Waikato (2004-08). He was Acting Vice Chancellor of Bond University (1995-96) and Chair of Senate (2000-03). He was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Adelaide (1986) and Parsons Scholar, Sydney Law School (1986 and 1987). He has been Visiting Professor at University of California Berkeley, University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario and Ghent University. From 2008 - 2015, he was Professor of Corporate Governance and Joint Director of the New Zealand Governance Centre at the Universite of Auckland Business School.

He is currently Emeritus Professor of Law at Bond University, and Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Waikato and the University of Auckland.  He is also Adjunct Professor of Law at La Trobe University.

John is the author of a number of books and papers on Company and Commercial Law and Corporate Governance. He has also been active in law reform in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia, and was a member of the Legislation Advisory Committee of New Zealand (2004-08).

In 2008 he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Law Teachers Association for services to legal education in Australia and New Zealand, and in 2013 he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Corporate Law Teachers' Association.  In 2014, he was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.

John's primary area of research is Corporate Law and Corporate Governance.  He has done interdisciplinary work in Corporate Governance and Corporate Finance and has been Joint Director of the New Zealand Governance Centre at the University of Auckland Business School.

He has been consultant to the New Zealand Treasury, Bankers' Association and Law Commission, the Business Council of Australia, the Investment and Financial Services Association, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Attorney General of Victoria. He was a member of the Federal Attorney General's Panel of Experts on Super Shares.
